Frequently Asked Questions about the AOSFYC and the Application Process

Click on each question below to learn more about The All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir and how to apply.  We encourage you to read every section in its entirety before proceeding with the online application.

The All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir (AOSFYC) was founded in 1963 by Glenville D. Thomas, who led the Youth Choir in concerts for thousands of visitors at the Ohio State Fair, directed them in a number of European tours and took them to several national parades.  Championed by four-term governor James A. Rhodes, the Choir has sung for several gubernatorial inaugurations and was proclaimed Ohio’s “Singing Ambassadors of Goodwill” by the state legislature.

Five days before the opening of the Ohio State Fair, the auditioned, 200-voice Choir meets at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus and launches into a rigorous schedule that includes vocal training; sessions on vocal health; part, sectional and full rehearsals; solo auditions; and marching instruction.  Once the Fair opens, the Youth Choir sings six to eight concerts a day, marching up to eight miles each day to various performance sites around the 360-acre fairgrounds.  In addition to performing, AOSFYC members enjoy activities, headliner concerts and other special events at the Fair, build lifelong friendships in the Choir, and develop leadership skills that many choose to take back to the choirs in their own communities.

Any students currently in 9th-12th grade and residing or attending school in Ohio may apply.  Singers are selected on the basis of their musical ability and experience, their teacher's recommendation, and the consent of their parent or guardian.
Members of the 2017 Choir will be engaged from July 20 through August 6, 2017.  Rehearsal week takes place July 20-25, and the Ohio State Fair runs from July 26 through August 6.  Only singers available the entire 18 days should apply.
The 200 Choir members live on site at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus and are housed in the Rhodes Center complex. Students are under capable, experienced adult leadership night and day.  Each day, three balanced meals are provided to singers in the Rhodes Center cafeteria at no charge.
Other than personal spending money, the average first-year 2016 Youth Choir member contributed $232 toward registration and the expense of the music packet, choir uniforms, and a choir jacket.  Returning choir members will pay only $130, as the same uniforms will be used in 2016.  All other costs (including meals, lodging, etc.) are underwritten by the Ohio Expositions Commission.  Similar residential music camps can cost participants upwards of $650!  Limited scholarship opportunities are available.  Do not let finances keep you from applying.  We are here to help!

"There aren't enough adjectives in the world to describe the powerful impact the AOSFYC has on those involved. The closest word I can find is growth. Growth comes in love, abilities and friendships. This is truly the experience of a lifetime."

Rose B. (Bucyrus, Ohio)

"I went to Columbus for my first year with this organization scared of what could happen. I left every year since then knowing that I am part of one of the best familes I could ever ask for."

John G. (Wooster, Ohio)

"At AOSFYC I learned so much about what I was capable of as a singer. On top of making amazing friendships that I know will last a lifetime, I walked away from there a better person and a better musician than when I arrived!  It's an experience that is truly unforgettable."

Mariah C. (Salem, Ohio)

"There are so many amazing people that you meet through AOSFYC! We all become so close through all the different songs and musical knowledge we obtain. This is much more than a choir, we are all one amazing family."

Cody K. (Ottoville, Ohio)

"From exhilarating rehearsals, to vivacious performances, AOSFYC offered many ways for choir members to not only gain a tremendous amount of experience, but also build healthy friendships that'll be remembered for a lifetime."
